With over 50 million views, it’s a testament to the growing popularity of AI-driven microdramas, which are redefining how stories are told in the digital age.
These microdramas, often no longer than 30 seconds per episode, are perfect for viewers who consume content on their smartphones during commutes or breaks. Chen Kun, the mastermind behind Strange Mirror of Mountains and Seas, explains that the format’s brevity allows AI to shine, as viewers are less likely to notice the occasional visual imperfections that come with the technology’s current limitations. ‘Even if AI can’t match the production quality of traditional filmmaking yet, it’s more than sufficient for microdramas,’ Chen told AFP.
And this is the part most people miss: the accessibility and affordability of AI tools are democratizing content creation. Odet Abadia, a teacher at the Shanghai Vancouver Film School, highlights how AI is revolutionizing the filmmaking process. ‘It’s so accessible, it lowers production costs dramatically, and it speeds up everything,’ she says. During a recent visit, Abadia demonstrated how students use AI platforms like Dzine to generate images for storyboards, sometimes producing fantastical results that add a unique ‘wow factor’ to their projects.
However, the rise of AI in entertainment isn’t without its critics. In Hollywood, the use of AI became a major point of contention during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. The introduction of AI ‘actress’ Tilly Norwood further fueled the debate, with many fearing that AI could replace human talent entirely. Louis Liu, a crew member on a live-action microdrama set in Shanghai, acknowledges the impact: ‘AI has already replaced most artists who create concept images in the early stages of film production.’
Yet, Chen Kun remains optimistic, believing that new roles, such as ‘prompt engineers’ who craft instructions for generative AI, will emerge. He also addresses concerns about copyright infringement, suggesting that creators of large language models should compensate the owners of works used in their datasets. Interestingly, even AI-generated content isn’t immune to plagiarism—Chen is currently embroiled in a legal battle over allegations that a social media account stole elements from his series’ trailer.
