James Gunn's Superman has been dominating the news cycle as filming is underway in Cleveland, giving fans a good insight into the movie. With the major roles cast like David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, to name a few, almost all of the major roles are set, but fans are also looking forward to plenty of potential cameos of DC characters. One notable cameo will have ties to the legendary Christopher Reeve as his son Will was spotted on set.

As confirmed by Variety, Will Reeve will have a cameo in Superman. Will Reeve is the son of Christopher Reeve and his wife, Dana Reeve, and was born in 1992. He is the youngest of Reeve's children, and he has two older half-siblings, Matthew and Alexandra, from their father's first marriage. While Christopher Reeve is best known for playing the superhero Superman and his reporter alter ego Clark Kent, Will Reeve continued the family legacy in his own way, much like Clark Kent. Will Reeve is also a journalist and ABC News Correspondent.

The Legacy of Superman Continues

Christopher Reeve is the actor most associated with the character of Superman, and the actor passed away in 2004. Reeve fittingly passed the Superman baton on to Smallville actor Tom Welling when he had a guest-starring role in the series' second season. While Christoper Reeve is not there to cameo in Superman, it is fitting that his son Will Reeve is present to do it. Much like how Reeve's legacy lives on through Superman, his legacy also lives on in his children, who get to share the screen with the latest actor to wear the Superman outfit. Will Reeve's cameo in Superman is a way of keeping the character's legacy alive.

It has since become a tradition for DC adaptations, particularly Superman ones, to feature roles from past incarnations. Smallville not only brought in Christopher Reeve, but his on-screen Lois Lane Margot Kidder also appeared on the series, as did Supergirl's Helen Slater. Superman Returns featured cameos by The Adventures with Superman actors Noel Neill (Lois Lane) and Jack Larson (Jimmy Olsen). The television series Supergirl featured Smallville's Supergirl actress Laura Vandervoort, and the series Lois Lane Erica Durance played Supergirl's mother. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures with Superman actors Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher had guest spots on Smallville and Supergirl.

Will Reeve's cameo is also another in a long line of James Gunn looking to honor Christopher Reeve's legacy and contribution to not just Superman, but also the entire DC legacy and superhero movie landscape. Warner Bros. Discovery's controversial decision to digitally recreate Christopher Reeve for a cameo in The Flash was met with criticism by many as a cheap and slightly ghoulish tactic. That movie was seen by many as tasteless, and even Reeves's children criticized the decision, saying it was made without their knowledge.

Following the fallout of The Flash, Gunn advocated for Warner Bros. Discovery to acquire the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024. The documentary focuses on Christopher Reeve's life following his horse riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed, which resulted in him becoming an activist for disability rights. Warner Bros. Discovery currently has the film scheduled to be screened in a limited release in association with Fathom Events on September 21 and 22, 2024, just three days before what would have been Christopher Reeve's 72nd birthday. The documentary is then expected to debut on Max, where it can sit comfortably alongside other documentaries documenting the importance of film and DC Comics.

Christopher Reeve might not be able to cameo in Superman, but instead of doing a cheap CGI recreation, having one of his kids cameo in the movie is a better way of honoring him. James Gunn's Superman movie was originally titled Superman: Legacy, and Will Reeve's casting shows how that title still informs much of the film.

Superman opens in theaters on July 11, 2025.
