Easy Homemade Sourdough Crouton Recipe (Plain or Seasoned) (1)

I have always been a huge salad fan, ever since I was young. But out of all the salads that I have enjoyed in my life, my favorite salads always included croutons.

Something about the little crunch on top of salad that elevates the veggie experience from great to scrumptious!

Our family didn’t typically buy croutons from the store growing up, but when I learned that all you needed were a few basic ingredients to make homemade croutons, I was hooked!

Since then, I have elevated my crouton recipe from store-bought sliced bread to slices of sourdough bread. What adifference!

The slight tang from the bread and open crumb make for truly delicious and crunchy sourdough croutons. Store-bought croutons can’t even compete!

Making sourdough croutons is a delicious way to eliminate food waste and transform day-old bread into something tasty. I love to experiment with different flavorings, as well. Sourdough croutons covered in fresh or dried herbs, dried cheeses, or fragrant garlic just can’t be beaten.

FAQs:

What kind of bread should I use to make sourdough croutons?

Any sourdough bread can be used for this crouton recipe. I’ve used all sorts of sourdough bread like my artisan loaf, roasted garlic rosemary sourdough, or sourdough sandwich bread. Stale sourdough ciabatta rolls, focaccia bread, or baguettes would also make delicious croutons. Use what you have!

Should I Use Fresh or Dried Herbs?

This tasty recipe is perfect for fresh or dried herbs! Coat the croutons with the dried herbs prior to baking, while sprinkling fresh herbs on the croutons after baking.

Why are my sourdough croutons soggy?

It is important that your croutons are spaced out in a single layer when baking. This allows the heat to reach the croutons from all sides to make them nice and crispy.

It is also crucial for the sourdough croutons to be completely cooled before storing them. If they are even a bit warm, the steam from the croutons will create condensation. This can make sourdough croutons lose their crunch and become soggy.
