Heartbreaking Double Murder: Brother's Court Appearance for Shooting Sisters in Mitchell's Plain (2025)

Imagine the horror: a family torn apart by unthinkable violence. A man stands accused of murdering his own sisters in cold blood, right in front of a school. He is scheduled to appear in Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court this Monday. But what led to this devastating act?

Gouwa Smith-Newman and Zainab Jacobs, the victims, were fatally shot on Thursday afternoon near Portlands Primary School in Mitchell’s Plain. They were reportedly waiting to collect the accused's children. The brazen attack, which unfolded in broad daylight around 3 PM on Wespoort Drive, also left a 12-year-old boy injured.

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the police spokesperson, confirmed the tragic details. The two women, aged 26 and 30, were allegedly approached by a male relative who then opened fire. "Medical personnel declared the younger victim dead at the scene," Twigg stated, "while the older woman succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at a nearby medical facility." The young boy, a Grade 6 student, was caught in the crossfire, suffering injuries that thankfully are not life-threatening.

Police apprehended the suspect, a 32-year-old man, shortly after the shooting. He now faces two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

A source speaking to the Weekend Argus suggested a possible motive: domestic tensions related to child visitation rights. But here's where it gets controversial... Could there be more to the story than just visitation disputes? The source further elaborated that the brother, arriving on foot, initially targeted Jacobs as she crossed the pedestrian crossing. He then allegedly moved towards Smith-Newman, who was sitting in a car, and shot her before fleeing the scene with the children.

One eyewitness recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the murders. "I was fetching my grandchild at school," the witness stated. "Then I heard a shot, which I initially thought was a firecracker, but then the second and third shot went off, and I could see how children were scrambling for safety." The witness described a scene of utter chaos, highlighting the lasting trauma inflicted on the children who witnessed the horrifying events. "When I looked up, I saw a scholar patrol girl standing frozen, like she didn’t know what to do. I grabbed her and pushed her inside the school premises…it was chaos! While looking around, I saw a lady lying halfway over the pedestrian crossing. Further down the road, people started gathering around a white Range Rover."

The eyewitness emphasized the profound psychological impact on the children who were on scholar patrol duty. "I understand two women were shot, but those children who witnessed everything they were standing on scholar patrol duties, they will be scarred for life. More focus needs to be put on them now." He also expressed concern about adults allowing children to look at the deceased person in the car, urging them to stop such behavior.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed that the shooting occurred just outside the school's perimeter. "This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved," said WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond. The WCED has deployed support teams, including counselors, to assist learners and staff. And this is the part most people miss... The department also confirmed that the victims were reportedly members of a foster family, and the alleged shooter is believed to be the biological parent of another learner at the school. The WCED has dispatched trauma counselors to the school to provide support to affected pupils and staff. This adds another layer of complexity to the already tragic situation.

Meanwhile, detectives are diligently pursuing their investigation into this double murder and attempted murder.

The Weekend Argus reached out to the family for comment, but they have requested privacy and respect during this incredibly difficult time.

This horrific event raises several critical questions. What support systems can be put in place to prevent such tragedies in the future? How can communities help families navigate complex issues like visitation rights without resorting to violence? And perhaps most importantly, how can we ensure the mental and emotional well-being of the children who witnessed this appalling act? What are your thoughts? Do you believe the focus should be more on supporting the children who witnessed the event or finding out the reasons for the incident? Share your perspective in the comments below.
