At nearly 39 years old, Lourdes Juarez proved she's still got what it takes, edging out Yesica Nery Plata in a thrilling match to retain her WBC junior flyweight title. This victory, decided by a majority decision after 10 intense rounds, showcased Juarez's experience and determination. The fight was a highlight of the Most Valuable Prospects 16 event, streamed worldwide on DAZN.
One judge scored the fight a draw at 95-95, but the other two saw Juarez winning with scores of 96-94. This narrow win marks the third career defeat for Plata, who had a strong start after a 22-month break from the ring.
Juarez's previous win was against Sarah Bormann, who recently unified the IBF/WBA strawweight titles. The fight between Juarez and Plata was a back-and-forth battle, with both fighters having their moments. Plata (with a record of 30-3, 3 KOs) used her jab and body shots effectively, while Juarez (with a record of 39-4, 5 KOs) increased her punch volume, drawing Plata into close-range exchanges. The two-minute rounds made it challenging to score, as both fighters had periods of success.
In a separate bout, Desley Robinson dominated Logan Holler, securing a second-round technical knockout. Robinson's victory came at 1:08 of the second round. Holler, making her first appearance in the United States, was overwhelmed by Robinson's skill. Also on the card, Omar Juarez won a 10-round points decision against Omar Rosario, with scores of 99-89, 99-89, and 97-91. Rosario was penalized two points for holding, which impacted his performance. Ronny Alvarez also impressed, winning by a fifth-round stoppage against Bruno Pola Ruiz. Alvarez, a highly-rated super middleweight prospect, continues to make a name for himself in the boxing world.
