NordseeMilch Goes Green: Switching from Plastic Cups to Cartons for a Sustainable Future (2025)

NordseeMilch's Plastic-Free Revolution: From Cups to Cartons

In 2025, the dairy cooperative NordseeMilch e.G. made a bold move that's sure to make waves in the industry. They're ditching plastic cup packaging for their fresh cream products in favor of Pure-Pak® cartons. This isn't just a random change; it's a strategic shift fueled by a commitment to sustainability and a desire to meet consumer demands.

This major step comes on the heels of NordseeMilch's recent investment in an Elopak Shikoku filling machine, marking the dairy's first foray into mini Pure-Pak® cartons. But it's more than just a packaging change. It's a continuation of their successful relaunch of NordseeMilch's Schlemmersahne cream, now conveniently available in 500ml cartons.

The carton revolution doesn't stop there. NordseeMilch's fresh whipping creams are now making the leap from plastic cups to 200ml cartons. And that's not all – they've also introduced their fresh cocoa drink, 'Watt’n Kakao', packaged in cartons, with animal welfare at its core.

Consumers Say 'Yes!' to Cartons

A 2024 Kantar study surveyed 200 fresh cream consumers about their preferences. The results were clear: Pure-Pak® cartons won the hearts and minds of shoppers. Consumers prefer cartons for their easy handling and clever opening system. With sustainability in mind, NordseeMilch chose cartons without screw caps, opting for the convenient easy-opening feature.

To ensure a smooth transition, the cartons include a simple three-step diagram and a QR code linking to a quick demo video. Volker Lohse, head of sales and food retail at NordseeMilch, explains, "The cartons without screw caps contain significantly less plastic than the current plastic cups."

"The carton perfectly matches German consumers' demand for packaging made from renewable resources and designed for recycling," he adds. "For our retail partners, improved logistics and a more eye-catching brand presentation in stores are crucial advantages in today's competitive market."

A Legacy of Innovation

Founded 131 years ago as 'Meierei-Genossenschaft', NordseeMilch has built its success on innovation, mergers, and strategic investments. Beyond expanding its own product line under the NordseeMilch brand since 2019, the cooperative has become one of the largest private label suppliers in the fresh milk sector in Germany.

Today, NordseeMilch e.G. produces dairy products for customers throughout Germany, maintaining a strong partnership with Elopak for over 20 years. This commitment to sustainability and innovation positions NordseeMilch as a leader in the industry, setting an example for others to follow.
