Radiohead's Raw and Honest Reflection on Their 7-Year Hiatus
In a rare and intimate interview, Radiohead's lead singer, Thom Yorke, opens up about the band's decision to take a lengthy break, shedding light on the personal and professional challenges that led to this unprecedented hiatus.
Yorke describes a metaphorical cliff that the band found themselves on after over three decades together. The group's last tour in 2018 felt like a precipice, and they knew they had to make a change. "The wheels came off, and we had to stop," Yorke explains, adding that the shows were great, but the band sensed an impending fall.
For Yorke, the time away allowed him to grieve the loss of his former wife, Rachel Owen, who passed away from cancer during their last tour. He shares that he hadn't processed his grief properly, and the break gave him the space to do so.
But it wasn't just about personal loss. Guitarist Ed O'Brien revealed that he felt "over Radiohead" before their reunion. He hated the touring lifestyle but found renewed love for the band when they started experimenting with their catalog. "I hit rock bottom in 2021, but coming out of it, I realized how much I love these guys," O'Brien said.
And here's where it gets controversial... The band's reunion also brought to light some differing beliefs and opinions, especially regarding their stance on Israel. O'Brien, who has shown support for Palestinians, admits that while the musicians are aligned musically, they haven't spoken much about their differing views. Jonny Greenwood, the guitarist and keyboardist, has collaborated with musicians from across the Middle East, including Israeli artist Dudu Tassa. In May, they canceled concerts due to backlash and threats, with Greenwood stating, "I'm not ashamed of working with Arab and Jewish musicians. I have loyalty and respect for the artists, not their governments."
Yorke, on the other hand, made it clear that he would not perform in Israel again, citing his distaste for the Netanyahu regime. Drummer Phil Selway explained that the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement's request to distance themselves from Jonny Greenwood was impossible, as it would mean the end of the band.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite these differences, the band members still feel a deep connection and respect for one another. They formed Radiohead in 1985 as schoolmates in Oxfordshire, England, and their musical journey has earned them two Grammy nominations and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Their most recent studio album, "A Moon Shaped Pool," showcases their stellar songwriting abilities.
