VAR Controversy: Arsenal and Tottenham Fans Unite Against Shocking Penalty Decision (2025)

Football fans were left stunned and outraged after a controversial VAR decision once again stole the spotlight in a Premier League clash. But here's where it gets controversial... Was it a fair call, or did the officials get it completely wrong? Arsenal and Tottenham supporters, usually fierce rivals, found common ground in their fury over a late penalty awarded to Newcastle during their 2-2 draw with Spurs. The incident, which occurred in the 86th minute, saw Rodrigo Bentancur penalized for allegedly fouling Dan Burn in the box. Anthony Gordon coolly converted the penalty, putting Newcastle ahead 2-1, before Cristian Romero salvaged a point for Tottenham in stoppage time.

And this is the part most people miss... The drama unfolded when VAR intervened, prompting referee Thomas Bramall to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor. Despite initially waving play on, Bramall overturned his decision, ruling that Bentancur had committed a holding offense. The Premier League Match Centre later clarified on X: 'After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Newcastle United.' Bramall explained on the pitch, 'After review, Tottenham number 30 makes a holding offence at the back post and clearly does not look at the ball. My final decision is penalty kick.'

This decision ignited a firestorm of criticism from fans of both Arsenal and Tottenham, who typically share little common ground. Arsenal fan @antenehaf (https://x.com/antenehafc) vented on X, 'They don’t know what they’re doing. You can’t pull it back for that and re-referee the game. It’s a mutual tussle. We all hate Spurs, but deciding a game on that is an absolute joke.' Meanwhile, @TalkoftheSpurs (https://x.com/TalkoftheSpurs) added, 'He’s not looking at the ball because Burn has Bentancur’s head jammed in his armpit! The game has gone! Absolutely mental!' Even Arsenal fan @marissacthomas4 (https://x.com/marissacthomas4) admitted, 'As an Arsenal fan, I’m always amused when Tottenham concede, but that penalty decision was ridiculous. I’d be fuming if that was given against my team. No matter who you support, the lack of consistency is infuriating.' Another Gooner, @kimmoFC (https://x.com/kimmoFC), chimed in, 'Another howler from VAR. You can’t give this as a penalty. Even Burn looks surprised.'

Here’s where opinions start to clash... Tottenham manager Thomas Frank was scathing in his assessment, labeling the decision 'an absolute VAR mistake.' Speaking to BBC Sport, he said, 'The referee did well to make the initial call, and they encourage the refereeing call on the pitch. For me, that is never a penalty. Even some Newcastle fans don’t think it’s a penalty. We need consistency. The referee’s call on the pitch was spot on, and VAR should only intervene if it’s clear and obvious.'

Unsurprisingly, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe saw it differently. He argued, 'I hadn’t seen it until now, but the defender isn’t looking at the ball at all—he’s focused on Dan [Burn]. I think it’s probably the right call.'

Despite Romero’s late equalizer, the pressure on Frank intensifies as Tottenham continue to struggle for form. With just two shots on target in the match, Spurs now return home, where they’ve won only once in seven Premier League games this season, to face Brentford on Saturday.

What do you think? Was the penalty decision justified, or was it another VAR blunder? Let us know in the comments—we want to hear your take on this heated debate!
