Brace yourselves, Western Australia! The skies unleashed their fury overnight, but the wild weather is far from finished. Get ready for more severe storms, potential flash flooding, and even hail!
Last night, Perth experienced a dramatic display of nature's power, with thunder and lightning illuminating the night. The Bureau of Meteorology reported 7.2mm of rainfall in Osborne Park, and social media was buzzing with residents sharing their experiences of the storm, including reports of incredibly loud thunder.
But here's where it gets concerning: the stormy conditions are expected to persist. Meteorologist Angus Hines warns that a low-pressure trough is moving across the state, promising more severe thunderstorms and showers, particularly in the afternoon and evening. This system is pushing rain and intense thunderstorms eastward over the coastline.
The Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Goldfields, and inland areas of WA are predicted to bear the brunt of these severe storms. However, Perth isn't entirely safe, with the eastern hills area also in the firing line.
But the forecast includes more than just thunderstorms. The Bureau of Meteorology is warning of heavy rain and severe storms that could cause significant problems.
"Heavy rain and storms can lead to flash flooding, and WA may also see some large hail or damaging wind gusts in association with the severe thunderstorms," Mr. Hines explained. This could result in damage to trees and property due to strong winds or large hailstones. Road closures and flash flooding are also a possibility, along with impacts on agriculture, affecting both crops and harvesting in the southern half of the state.
This is a critical time for residents to stay vigilant. Be prepared for potential damage from the weather. If you require emergency assistance during the storm, contact the SES on 132 500.
